I like it. I’ve heard the carbs are tricky to tune, though.

Rust. Lots of it.

Love it, specially that yellow.

Yeah, rust is the Mk1 Civic’s Achilles heel.

They look cool, but...
they’re not actually that awesome to drive compared to some other 70s compacts.

Example, please?

Yeah, the yellow is one of the best features of the car in my opinion. It reminds me of the yellow Renault Le Car’s came in.

It wouldn’t be that hard to change the carbs out though.

My dad went through a few of these in the late 70s early 80s. He would buy them broken, fix them, commute with them for a few years, then sell them.

According to what I’ve heard, these had Beetle-esq popularity back then, so it was probably pretty profitable.

He wasn’t looking for profit, he was looking to keep miles off his nicer car.
He used these things for beater commuters.
We had a brown hatch, and a blue ... coupe? I don’t know what they called the ones with the trunk.
We called the brown one “Rusty Jones” because of the sticker, and the fact that it was rusty.

I would take a Renault Le Car anyday over a 1st gen civic, or even a Subaru 1400.

It’s every Civics Achilles heel. Until the mid 2000s. Then it was clear coat...

love it want one

Yeah, I would take a Le Car over this as well. I think the driving experience is different though, because the Civic has more Mini -like handling, and the Renault has the classic floaty French suspension. (I’m just going off what I’ve heard, I’ve never driven either.)

Who doesn’t?

Which was an unreliable, POS, copy of this.

Wayyyy cooler than most of the modern Civics.

The civic has a stiffer, choppier ride, but I don’t know that the cornering is all that good. Unfortunately I just packed up all my old car mags, but I think the Civic had skidpad results that were near identical to just about everything else in its price range. It also has a modicum of torque steer if you get hard on the gas pedal. Incidentally when the N600 arrived in England it was found that it surprisingly didn’t handle nearly as well as the mini despite tester expectations.
The Renault has very soft suspension but it also handles very neutrally and is generally a joy to drive hard (or lightly).

We need a review/story about the Le Car. Now .

Jon E. did a review on here a while ago. I’ll write about my adventures with my old one some day...

More like every japanese car until the 2000s.

Yeah, I read both his reciew and the story he wrote about his Black Beauty.
The Reanult and Civic have a common factor in that everyone has a story about them. Maybe one was your first car, or maybe your crazy uncle owned one, or maybe your buddy in high school owned one and you beat the hell out of it. Both of the cars are old enough that you don’t see them anywhere anymore, but new enough that people remember seeing them when they were new, and were cheap enough and common enough when new that everyone had a chance to expierence one, unlike a Countach or a Boss Mustang or a Hemi Cuda, which, while valuable, are so rare that they are almost unrelatable. Same thing with an old Beetle, or bus, or Saab, or Corvair, or MG. Everyone has a story, and the stories are one of the best things about the cars.

True enough.
I like the style of Rutledge Wood's Civic he recently sold. It was sort of a pale green with gold-ish colored wire rims.
